Police - Drunken arsonist causes havoc in Decatur | Crime
Decatur Police say a man went on a drunken arson spree over the weekend.
Fire crews were called to the scene of several small fires along the 900 block of 5th Avenue at around 2:30 on Sunday morning.
When they got there, they saw a shed and six garages engulfed in flames. Police officers responding to the call saw a man in the alley, watching the fires. They approached the man, who was later identified as 40 year old William Martis Harville. Officers determined that Harville was intoxicated, and a danger to himself and others. He was taken into custody for public intoxication. A short time later, investigators determined he was the man responsible for the fires.
After questioning Harville and taking a closer look at the scene, investigators believe they have a clear picture of what happened that night :
According to Decatur Police, at around 2:00 a.m., Harville set fire to a dumpster on the 1000 block of 6th Avenue. He then walked to the 900 block of 5th Avenue, where he set a mattress on fire in the alley behind a home. The mattress fire spread to a shed. After that, he set fire to six double car garages. He also broke into the garages before starting the blazes.
Harville has been charged with public intoxication, 3rd degree burglary, 3rd degree arson, and 2nd degree arson. He's being held in the Morgan County Jail on $6,000 bond.
