Lots of sun along with summer-like temperatures had lots of people hitting area lakes this Memorial Day.

The Tennessee River is a boaters' playground, with lots of things to see and do. But there are also laws governing boating just like there are drivers on land.

"In order to obtain your boating license you have to attend a boating safety course. There is a test at the end. They have to be licensed to operate the boat," said Larry Adams, Alabama Marine Police.

Adams said that endorsement is taken to the courthouse and placed on the driver's license. A type of learners permit is offered for ages 12 and 13. Boaters with a license can operate the vessel alone at age 14 . But if you are 56-years-old today, you don't need the license.

Safety checks are common and if you are not on compliance you could get a ticket and a fine.

Just like on dry land, one of the biggest offenses involves alcohol.

"There is no difference in operating car and a boat with DUI laws," added Officer Adams.

You can contact your local courthouse for more information about boating education classes in your area.
