Decatur Animal Shelter Pets of the Week

Decatur Animal Shelter Pets of the Week

Looking for a new family pet? The Decatur Animal Shelter has two dogs and one cat who would love a home!

Bruiser is a 15 week old Australian Cattle Dog or Heeler, probably blended with a Rat terrier. Whatever he is, he’s a little trooper, playful, happy, friendly, and definitely ready to go home with you and liven up your life. Have kids…like to hike…ride a bike…run, whatever you enjoy doing, he’s going to be a perfect partner for you as he grows and goes along with you on your way.

Lilian loves to snuggle! This beautiful tortoiseshell is happiest being held; in your lap or with her head nestled up under your ear. She purrs constantly. She’s only 11 months old and like to play too, but being a lovebug is definitely her thing.

Deputy Vest and Rico just completed their training in Huntsville and they are now certified as a team through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) in narcotics detection and patrol work.

Pinched pocketbooks have spelled success for thrift stores, and today there's a bigger selection of shops than ever. Most carry goods for the entire family, and with a little bit of repurposing, that includes purchases for your dog.

When shopping at your thrift store, be sure to watch for dog items that can be thoroughly cleaned either with a good scrubbing or in the washing machine. Here are supplies that make perfect thrift store finds:

Bowls Stainless steel bowls are good buys and very easy to find at most thrift stores. Expect to pay as little as $1 to $2 each for these nearly indestructible bowls.

Social media boosts cat adoption efforts

Social media boosts cat adoption efforts

From The Daily Cat
Arriving at the Facebook page for "Pets on Death Row" is heartbreaking. "I get the euth list every night from Animal Care & Control (AC&C) and post it on Facebook," says Kay Smith, a New York City animal activist who runs the page. "There are always so many cats -- 25 to 30 -- and if no one steps up, they all get killed the next day."

Social Petworking
Smith's page is just one example of how social media is gradually transforming the process of rescuing and adopting animals. Her project is very local in that it only posts info about cats in New York City shelters.

Is your dog suffering from fall allergies?

Is your dog suffering from fall allergies?

By Dr. Jessica Vogelsang
From The Dog Daily

In the autumn, falling leaves and dried-out weeds release clouds of irritating particulate matter into the air, right where your dog is waiting to inhale them. As pets move indoors to escape the cold, mite allergies may develop.

Dogs trap allergens in their extensive sinuses. Fur is also a natural magnet for dust and particles, which means that your dog could be covered -- inside and out -- in triggering pollens. Add to that a warm autumn where the fleas are still around and you have one unhappy dog.

Dog allergies manifest in several ways, but the symptom most commonly recognized by owners is itching.

Diabetes dog trains to save owner's life

Diabetes dog trains to save owner's life

By Bobby Shuttleworth

Brittany Forster is in the process of bonding with her new best friend. Jagger is the latest member of the household, from the Guardian Angel Service Dog Program. His trainer, James Faulkner, is from Virginia.

"We train the dogs to alert to the fluctuations of blood sugars. What will happen is when a diabetic's blood sugar will get high or low, they will either bark, whine or let the diabetic or family member know," said Faulkner.

He said the dog can literally smell the change, "They can actually pick up on the scent 20 to 45 minutes before the meter can actually detect it," said Faulkner.

As Brittany bonds with Jagger, her family remembers a day when Brittany had a close call when her sugar number skyrocketed. She was in the hospital in Decatur and Birmingham for a while.
