15th annual bass tournament will be this weekend

The Associated Builders & Contractors and Lynn Layton Chevrolet present the15th Annual Bass Tournament.

Prizes include a quarenteed payout of $1700.00 for the first three places and a $250.00 biggest fish prize.

The event will be Saturday, April 14 at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur, Ala.

Fishing tournament raises money for cancer society

The City of Athens raised more than $5,100 for the American Cancer Society with their fishing tournament.

The first annual Relay for Life, Team Bass Fishing Tournament was Saturday at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur.

The first place team was Chris Leopard and Howard Kinch. The team caught 20.29 pounds of fish.

Second place was Zack Waddell and Bruce Lott with 18.17 pounds of fish.

Patrick Cutten and Rick Armstrong came in third place. They caught 16.15 pounds of fish.

In fourth place were Will Beutjer and Chris Rose with 15.50 pounds of fish.

The team that finished fifth was Brian Merriman and Warren Winsett with 14.39 pounds of fish.

The team that caught the biggest fish of the tournament was Eddie Jewell and Shane Jewell. They caught a fish that was 5.35 pounds.

Wildlife refuge to host raptor program

Wildlife refuge to host raptor program

Wheeler National Wildlife refuge will host a raptor program at the visitor center Saturday March 10.

John and Dale Stokes, a husband and wife team, will present the birds of prey program.

There will be two one hour programs at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission is free to the public.

The audience will get close-up views of several species of birds of prey, including owls, hawks, a black vulture and an American bald eagle.

While the refuge and Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association sponsor the program, it is presented by Save Our American Raptors-South.

Decatur Animal Services traps coyote

Decatur Animal Services traps coyote

Decatur Animal Services caught a young female coyote over the weekend where several pets were killed earlier this year.

Animal Services Director Carol Wicks said the coyote was caught in a "large dog" or box-style humane trap in southwest Decatur. She said the coyote went into the trap to reach a chicken carcass used as bait. She was taken to the animal shelter where she was put down.

Alabama Department of Public Health issues 2010 Fish Consumption Advisories

The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued warnings concerning fish from some North Alabama Waterways.

Scientists are concerned about mercury levels and other contaminants in fish from waters in several counties including waterways in Lawrence, Jackson, Limesone, Madison and Franklin Counties.

AWF Wild Game Cook-Off and Silent Auction Tuesday, Oct. 5

The best wild game around will be found at the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) Wild Game Cook-Off and Silent Auction on Tuesday, October 5, at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur.

Festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m. and in addition to all the outstanding food, a major highlight of the cook-off will be the opportunity to win door prizes, the silent auction and live entertainment.
